I use female figures as a lens through which I explore femininity. They give me a space to express emotion, identity, vulnerability and strength, and to reflect on the many ways femininity can be felt and understood.
Facial expression is also an important part of how I communicate emotion. I'm interested in the moment when a look can carry as much meaning as a pose. The women in my drawings express themselves not only through the body, but through the eyes, the mouth, and the tension of the face.
Touching the Shadow
When an artist chooses to look inward, there is no guarantee that what appears will be beautiful or reassuring. Some parts of the inner world are tangled, uncomfortable, and difficult to understand. There is not always an answer, and not always a clear way out. This drawing is about the choice to reach toward that darkness anyway.
